Shells and Stones

Pistachio Shell Fuel Supply

Pistachio shells — the hard shells left when pistachios are cracked and the kernels removed — have low ash and a high calorific value, and in south-eastern Türkiye they are burned in everything from stoves to industrial boilers. Biyolink collects shells from pistachio processing plants, verifies them with laboratory analysis and delivers them to industrial plants in bulk or in big bags — and buys from producers who have shells to sell.

What Are Pistachio Shells and Where Do They Come From?

A fresh pistachio has a soft red hull, removed straight after harvest; it is moist and is not used directly as fuel. Beneath it is the hard shell, separated from the kernel at cracking plants and coming out as two halves. This hard shell makes up a large part of the weight of an in-shell pistachio.

Most of Türkiye’s pistachios grow in south-eastern Anatolia: Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep lead, followed by Adıyaman, Siirt, Kahramanmaraş and Kilis, and Gaziantep is the centre of processing and trade. The harvest is in August–September; cracking continues through the year, so shells are available for most of it. Pistachio trees bear heavily and lightly in alternate years, so shell volumes vary from year to year.

Typical Technical Values

PropertyTypical value
Net calorific valueAbout 3,600–4,100 kcal/kg depending on moisture
Moisture5–10%
Ash1–2%
Bulk densitySimilar to wood chips; varies with piece size
FormBulk, split shell halves

These are typical ranges from published sources; actual values vary by lot, source and moisture. We share a laboratory analysis of every lot with our quote.

What Are Pistachio Shells Used For?

Pistachio shells are used as garden mulch and as a carbon source in compost, and as a raw material for activated carbon and briquettes. As a fuel, low ash and a high calorific value make them suitable for anything from stoves to industrial boilers; they are dry and even-sized, so they move easily on the screw conveyors of automatically fed boilers. Their ash can melt at lower temperatures than wood ash, so blending with wood is advisable in boilers that run hot.

  • Steam and hot-water boilers (textiles, food)
  • Central-heating boilers and stoves
  • Biomass power plants and cement kilns
  • Raw material for briquettes and blended fuel

Transport and Delivery

Pistachio shells travel in bulk on tipper or walking-floor trailers, or in big bags. The cup-shaped halves are light, so trucks often fill by volume before weight, and good loading decides the tonnage per run. They should be covered in transit and stored indoors to keep them dry. Every shipment is recorded with a waybill and a weighbridge ticket.

What Determines the Price of Pistachio Shells?

The price per tonne is not fixed; it changes with the crop, the season and the lot. We build our quote around:

  • Moisture and ash (laboratory analysis)
  • The crop: heavy and light bearing years
  • Volume and delivery schedule
  • Distance to the delivery point and form (bulk or big bags)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the calorific value of pistachio shells?

Published sources give a net calorific value of about 3,600–4,100 kcal/kg depending on moisture. The exact value varies by lot; we share a laboratory analysis of every lot with our quote.

Do pistachio shells burn well?

Yes. Pistachio shells burn well in stoves and central-heating boilers built for solid fuel and leave little ash. In automatically fed boilers the feeding system must suit the shell size. Biyolink supplies pistachio shells at industrial scale, in bulk or big bags.

What are pistachio shells used for?

They are used as fuel, and also as garden mulch, as a carbon source in compost and as a raw material for activated carbon and briquettes.

Are pistachio shells the same as peanut shells?

No. This page covers the hard shell of the pistachio. Peanut shells are lighter and bulkier, with more ash — a separate product that we also supply and buy. See our peanut shells page: /en/products/peanut-shells/

How can I sell my pistachio shells?

Sign up to our marketplace for free and create a listing, or message us on WhatsApp. Tell us the volume, the location and any analysis values you have.

How much does a tonne of pistachio shells cost?

The price per tonne depends on the crop, season, moisture, volume and delivery point, so we do not publish a fixed price. Tell us the volume, delivery location and schedule and we will send a current quote with the analysis values.
