Hazelnut Shell Fuel Supply
With a high calorific value and low moisture, hazelnut shells are one of the most popular agricultural biomass fuels in Türkiye. Biyolink collects shells from hazelnut cracking plants, verifies them with laboratory analysis and delivers them to industrial plants in bulk or in big bags — and buys from producers who have shells to sell.

What Are Hazelnut Shells and Where Do They Come From?
Hazelnut shells are the hard outer shells separated from the kernel at cracking plants. Roughly half the weight of an in-shell hazelnut is shell, so cracking plants produce large volumes of it all year round.
Türkiye produces most of the world’s hazelnuts. The main sources are cracking plants in Ordu, Giresun, Samsun, Trabzon, Düzce and Sakarya. The harvest is in August–September, but cracking continues throughout the year, so shells are available year-round.
Typical Technical Values
| Property | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Net calorific value | About 3,800–4,400 kcal/kg depending on moisture |
| Moisture | 8–15% |
| Ash | 1–2% |
| Bulk density | About 300–350 kg/m³ |
| Form | Bulk, broken shells |
These are typical ranges from published sources; actual values vary by lot, source and moisture. We share a laboratory analysis of every lot with our quote.
Where Are Hazelnut Shells Used?
Low ash and a high calorific value make hazelnut shells well suited to automatically fed boilers. The pieces are small and even, so they move smoothly on screw conveyors.
- Steam and hot-water boilers (textiles, food, paper)
- Greenhouses and drying plants
- Biomass power plants
- Alternative fuel in cement kilns
Transport and Delivery
Hazelnut shells travel in bulk on tipper or walking-floor trailers, or in big bags. They should be covered in transit and stored indoors to keep them dry. Every shipment is recorded with a waybill and a weighbridge ticket.
What Determines the Price of Hazelnut Shells?
The price per tonne is not fixed; it changes with the season and the lot. We build our quote around:
- Moisture and ash (laboratory analysis)
- Volume and delivery schedule
- Distance to the delivery point and form (bulk or big bags)
- The cracking season and market supply

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the calorific value of hazelnut shells?
Published sources give a net calorific value of about 3,800–4,400 kcal/kg depending on moisture. The exact value varies by lot; we share a laboratory analysis of every lot with our quote.
Which boilers can burn hazelnut shells?
Automatically fed grate boilers, fluidised-bed boilers and burner systems designed for biomass. Share your boiler manufacturer’s fuel specification and we will assess suitability together.
Are hazelnut shells available all year?
Yes. The harvest is in August–September, but cracking runs all year, so shells do too. For large, regular orders we plan stock and the delivery schedule in advance.
How can I sell my hazelnut shells?
