Wood Chip Supply and Purchasing

Wood chips are the staple fuel of large biomass boilers and power plants. Biyolink grades wood chips from forestry, sawmill residues and pruning by moisture and size and delivers them to your plant in bulk — and buys from wood chip producers.

Wood Chips

What Are Wood Chips?

Wood chips are made by chipping wood from forest thinning and maintenance, sawmill residues and pruning into pieces a few centimetres long. Whether the wood is debarked sets the ash content; whether the chips are dried sets the calorific value.

In Türkiye the main sources are forestry operations and the timber industry in the Black Sea and Marmara regions. The international standard ISO 17225-4 grades wood chips by size, moisture and ash; the right class depends on your boiler’s feeding system.

Typical Technical Values

PropertyTypical value
Net calorific valueAbout 2,000–3,500 kcal/kg depending on moisture
Moisture20–50% (20–30% for dried chips)
Ash0.5–3% (depending on bark content)
Bulk densityAbout 200–350 kg/m³
SizeISO 17225-4 classes; mostly 16–45 mm

These are typical ranges from published sources; actual values vary by lot, source and moisture. We share a laboratory analysis of every lot with our quote.

Where Are Wood Chips Used?

Wood chips are among the cheapest biomass fuels per unit of energy, and come into their own in large boilers and plants that run continuously.

  • Grate and fluidised-bed biomass boilers
  • Biomass power and cogeneration plants
  • Steam generation at paper, textile and food plants
  • District heating systems

Transport and Delivery

Wood chips are bulky and light, so they travel in bulk on high-volume walking-floor trailers. At the plant they are unloaded by walking floor, screw conveyor or loader, and should be stored under cover to hold their moisture down.

What Determines the Price of Wood Chips?

With wood chips, what you are really paying for is energy: a tonne of wet chips delivers far less than a tonne of dried chips. We build our quote around:

  • Moisture — the biggest driver of energy per tonne
  • Size class and the share of bark or fines
  • Volume, continuity and delivery schedule
  • Distance to the delivery point

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between wood chips and pellets?

Pellets are made by compressing sawdust; they are dense, dry and uniform. Wood chips are simply chipped wood — wetter and bulkier, but usually cheaper per unit of energy. Pellets suit small automatic boilers, wood chips large ones.

What is the calorific value of wood chips?

Published sources give about 2,000–3,500 kcal/kg depending on moisture; dried chips sit near the top of the range, fresh chips near the bottom. We share a laboratory analysis of every lot.

Which chip size should I buy?

Your boiler’s feeding system decides: screw feeders need small, even pieces, while walking floors and grate systems take larger ones. We choose the right class from your boiler specification.
